Wedding photography is expensive for three reasons: missing a key photo is risky, photography is a skilled trade, and digital images and editing are labor-intensive.

There are three reasons why wedding photography is expensive. The first one is simple: risk. Second, photographing a wedding requires skill, and last, wedding photos are labor-intensive. A wedding is one of the biggest days of a bride's and groom's life. There are no second chances for a picture if a photographer misses a critical moment.

Risk

The risk of missing a critical moment is high during a wedding. A guest taking a photo could move into a photographer's shot, a photographer could miscalculate the lighting or miss the shot because he or she was out of position. Some of the best wedding photographers are relentless in paying attention to every detail at a wedding and positioning themselves for the best photo opportunity. Wedding photography skills develop through experience and repetition. Photographing a wedding is like driving 100 mph for 8 hours straight non-stop.

Having a family member or friend with a good camera photograph your wedding might sound like a nice idea, but its not! Most people can take a picture the photography industry has made it easy to do. But that does not mean that a person is skilled in wedding photography or lighting.

Skill

Photographing a wedding imposes some of the greatest pressures a photographer will experience; that's why skill is important. Photographing a wedding requires a special type of skill set, experience and a keen understanding of how to anticipate, in addition to great people skills and etiquette. Invest in the most professional photographer money can buy. Most professionals know their value and will set prices accordingly.

Post Production Labor

And finally three, a photographer will generally spend more hours then they admit to in postproduction on the photos. Post production involves processing images, which could include transferring, backing up and editing over 800 hi-res images from a typical wedding day. In many cases the time spent processing an 8-hour shoot can be a daunting task.

Poorly planned weddings usually produce longer and more costly days for everyone. A seasoned photographer will know whether a wedding is organized based on a bride’s preparedness for their meeting and whether there is a Wedding Planner. A detailed-oriented photographer will extract all the information they can about a wedding day. If the wedding seems ill prepared, most photographers are going to recommend a long range of coverage like 10 or 12 hours, which is going to “pump up” cost.

Poorly planned weddings are difficult for any photographer because they limit shooting time. The best run weddings either have a Wedding Planner or someone who is capable of directing the event.
